ABOUT US

Who We Are

The Southeastern Massachusetts Mineral Club (SEMMC) is a non-profit organization, founded in 1968 and has been in continuous association. Due to its geographical location SEMMC also serves the Boston community and Rhode Island. From its beginnings SEMMC has been envisioned both as an organization where fellow collectors could rub elbows and, primarily, as an educational organization promoting aspects of the earth sciences. The SEMMC constitution states that the objectives of the Club ".. shall be to disseminate knowledge ... stimulate interest..." in mineralogy and allied fields. SEMMC remains true to this found vision. Mineralogy, Glaciology, lapidary science, vulcanology and paleontology are among the principle interest of the members.

Newsletter

The SEMMC newsletter, "Outcroppings" is published eleven times per year. The "outcroppings" serves to publish the minutes of the previous meeting, make general announcements and supply information about upcoming events. In addition, field notes, abstracts, book reviews, collecting tips and articles of general interest appear regularly.

Exhibits

SEMMC sets up mineral exhibits at area libraries to enlighten the population of southeastern Massachusetts about the aspects of our hobby.

Field Trips

SEMMC considers field trips to be an important part of club activities. Club organized field trips are considered to be either primarily educational or primarily collecting field trips. Visits to museums, mineral shows and lectures are primarily educational in purpose. Collecting field trips are regularly taken throughout the New England area. Additionally, members schedule individual and small group outings on heir own.

We have two new field trips with permit by the state of CT. One is the CCC Quarry in Haddam, Ct on May 15, 2011. The other is the Case Quarry in Portland, CT, on October 2, 2011.
